Between May 19 and May 22, 2026, IDS Východ, Ltd. carried out an extensive traffic count at all three border crossings between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine. The activity was implemented as part of the OTRACON SK-UA project and represents an important step towards better understanding transport flows in the cross-border region.
On the Slovak side, data collection was carried out using modern technology. IDS Východ installed camera-based traffic counting systems, procured within the project, directly at the border crossing profiles. This process was implemented in close cooperation with the Border and Foreign Police, whose assistance was crucial both during installation and operation.
The aim of the traffic count was to obtain accurate data on traffic volumes and flow structures, which will be further used for transport modelling and analytical outputs supporting strategic mobility planning.
These activities are complemented by parallel data collection on the Ukrainian side. From May 20 to May 25, 2026, a questionnaire-based transport survey is being conducted in the Zakarpattia region, particularly in the border areas. Its purpose is to enrich the quantitative traffic data with qualitative insights into travel behaviour and mobility needs.
The combination of traffic counts on the Slovak side and survey-based data from the Ukrainian side makes it possible to build a comprehensive picture of mobility across the Slovak-Ukrainian border region. The outcomes will serve as a basis for designing effective transport solutions and future investments in the area.
