Within the implementation of the cross-border project OTRACON SK–UA, intensive preparatory activities are currently underway for the planned traffic survey, which will take place in the second half of May 2026 in both the Slovak Republic and Ukraine. This survey represents one of the key analytical inputs of the project and is essential for a better understanding of current transport patterns and mobility in the Slovak–Ukrainian border region.
The preparatory phase includes a series of working and coordination meetings among project partners, focusing on organisational, technical and methodological aspects of data collection. These activities cover the preparation of the survey schedule, obtaining the necessary permits, procurement of technical equipment and harmonisation of approaches between the Slovak and Ukrainian sides to ensure that the collected data are comparable and suitable for further project analyses.
On the Slovak side, the traffic survey will be carried out through the installation of traffic counting cameras on selected road sections near the border. This method allows for objective and continuous data collection on traffic volumes, composition of traffic flows and temporal variations in traffic intensity. The collected data will subsequently undergo statistical and analytical processing, providing essential inputs for the updating of transport models and strategic transport planning.
On the Ukrainian side, data collection will be conducted through a sociological and demographic survey in the border area, implemented during the same period. This approach aims to gain deeper insight into travel behaviour, trip purposes, frequency of cross-border movements and socio-demographic factors influencing mobility in the region. The survey results will serve as an important qualitative complement to the quantitative traffic data collected on the Slovak side.
An integral part of the preparations also includes the procurement of technical equipment and services, as well as administrative procedures required to ensure the implementation of the survey in compliance with applicable legislation on both sides of the border. Particular attention is also paid to data protection and ethical aspects of data collection, especially in relation to the sociological survey.
The joint traffic survey carried out simultaneously in Slovakia and Ukraine will provide a solid analytical foundation for further activities within the OTRACON SK–UA project. The collected data will contribute to a more accurate assessment of transport needs, support the design of efficient cross-border solutions and serve as a basis for strategic recommendations in the field of transport and mobility in the Slovak–Ukrainian border region.
