After the initial phase of the OTRACON SK–UA project, the focus of the partners shifted to concrete technical and analytical activities. During the past period, IDS Východ, s.r.o. actively contributed to several key tasks forming the basis for high-quality transport planning in the Slovak–Ukrainian border region.
One of the first steps was the harmonisation of methodologies for traffic surveys and traffic counts with Ukrainian partners. A common approach to data collection is essential to ensure comparability, joint evaluation, and effective use of data in transport modelling.
This work is directly linked to the ongoing update of the transport model of Eastern Slovakia, which is being gradually supplemented with new input data, including information from the National Motorway Company and other infrastructure administrators. The transport model, administered by IDS Východ on behalf of the Košice and Prešov Self-Governing Regions, serves as a key analytical tool for assessing traffic flows, identifying capacity constraints, and evaluating future investment plans.
At the same time, expert working meetings were held focusing on the identification of key transport sections, preparation of methodologies for field measurements, and discussions on planned road infrastructure investments. These meetings helped connect analytical outputs with the real needs of the territory.
IDS Východ also played an important role in the coordination of traffic data collection in cooperation with the Road Administrations of the Košice and Prešov Self-Governing Regions. The installation of traffic counting devices supports both the objectives of the OTRACON SK–UA project and the company’s long-term transport planning activities, creating lasting added value.
All activities are supported by regular monthly coordination meetings with Ukrainian partners, during which key outputs are continuously refined. These include the bypass study for the village of Solomonovo and expert background materials for the planned construction of a new border crossing Čierna nad Tisou – Solomonovo, closely linked to the transport model and overall project objectives.
Through these activities, the OTRACON SK–UA project is gradually fulfilling its ambition to combine high-quality data, expert know-how, and cross-border cooperation into solutions that can meaningfully contribute to improved mobility and transport infrastructure development in the region.
In the upcoming period, test and full-scale traffic counts, as well as a socio-economic survey on the Ukrainian side, will be carried out. Their results will provide the most up-to-date overview of mobility conditions in the cross-border area.
